He led an assembly where he talked of his early struggles with handwriting in the rush to get all of his ideas down. As a writer he stressed the importance of writing for yourself, because if you don't enjoy your story you can't guarantee anyone else will. 

David began writing to try and inspire some of the boys he was coaching on his football team to read more as they couldn't find any books that they enjoyed. As a result David began the Alfie Jones series and he read some to our children yesterday.

As well as the assembly the author conducted workshops with each year group. Reading chapters from his books while getting the children to act them out before answering questions from the audience.
