Outdoor Classroom Day
Southbourne Junior School Celebrating Every Day as an Outdoor Classroom
On the last day of school before the October half term, the pupils of Southbourne Juniors spent the day learning outside, as they celebrated World Outdoor Classroom Day, proving that some of the most powerful lessons happen under open skies! Every corner of the school grounds was alive with learning, the youngest explorers working with the oldest children to create works of art from fallen leaves, pupils getting to grips with nordic knitting, wood work and the whole school (adults included) working on toasting the perfect melt in the middle marshmallows!
As well as a large field, the outdoor classroom at Southbourne Juniors includes a meadow, pond area and impressive tipi where children learn to take risks, develop resilience and an appreciation of how time spent outdoors nurtures both body and mind. World Outdoor Classroom Day may come once a year, but for Southbourne Junior School, outdoor learning isn’t just reserved for special occasions, it’s a celebration of the school ethos; that learning doesn’t have to be confined to walls, it thrives in fresh air and muddy welly boots!
